Privacy policy
Effective date: 23 October 2026
Chivchiv ("the app", "we", "us") is a Marathi story app for children, made by Sunil Patil in the United Kingdom. This policy explains what information the app uses and why. We wrote it in plain language because parents should be able to read it in two minutes.
Short version: we don't ask for your child's personal information, we don't show ads, we don't sell or share data for advertising, and what you enter about your child stays on your phone.
1. Information that stays on your phone
When you set up the app you may enter:
- your child's first name or nickname (to say "Stories for Aarav"),
- an age group (3+, 5+ or 8+), never a date of birth,
- a Marathi level, a chosen avatar (a drawing, never a photo),
- app settings, the daily reminder time, listening history, saved and downloaded stories, the streak, quiz results, and the ratings you give.
This information is stored only on your device. We don't receive it. Deleting the app deletes it.
2. Information the app sends
| What | Why | Who processes it |
|---|---|---|
| Story requests (which story file to download) | To deliver audio, pictures and text | Cloudflare (file delivery), Supabase (story list) |
| Anonymous story statistics: which story was started, listened to or read, in which language, how far it got (a quarter, half, three quarters or the end), your child's age group, and the app version. Only the day is recorded, never the time. No name, no user ID, no advertising ID. Only sent while "Share anonymous story stats" in Settings is on. Individual records are deleted after 90 days; only totals per story (no link to any child) are kept. | To learn which stories children enjoy | Supabase |
| Story ratings: the story, the stars chosen at the end, the day, whether it was after listening or reading, and the language. No name, no user ID. | To show which stories children love most | Supabase |
| Story requests: the text a parent types and an optional age group. Please do not include names or personal details. | To decide which stories to make | Supabase |
| Anonymous search statistics: when a search finds no story, the short word typed (letters only, at most two words, no numbers or symbols, so it cannot hold a name, number or address) and the day. Nothing else, no age group, no user ID. Only sent while "Share anonymous story stats" in Settings is on. Individual records are deleted after 90 days; only totals per word are kept. | To learn which stories to add | Supabase |
| Crash reports (device model, OS version, what went wrong) | To fix bugs | Google Firebase Crashlytics |
| A notification token | To send new-story notifications you turned on | Google Firebase Cloud Messaging |
| Purchase records (which plan, renewal status) | To unlock stories you paid for and restore purchases | Google Play Billing, RevenueCat |
You can switch off anonymous usage statistics at any time in Settings › Privacy.
Like any internet service, these providers receive your device's IP address when the app connects to them. We don't use it to identify you.
3. What we don't do
- No advertising and no advertising ID.
- No selling or sharing of data for advertising or profiling.
- No access to your photos, contacts, camera, microphone or location.
- No chat, no public profiles, no way for strangers to contact your child.
- No collecting of dates of birth or children's photos.
4. Payments
Payments are handled by Google Play. We never see your card details. We receive only a record that a purchase is active, through our purchase provider RevenueCat, so we can unlock stories and restore them on a new phone.
5. Children
Chivchiv is designed for children and their parents. Purchases, settings, sharing, links outside the app and sign-in are behind a grown-ups check. We aim to follow children's privacy rules, including the UK Age Appropriate Design Code and the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it.
6. Accounts (later)
The first version has no accounts. If we later add an optional "Save your progress" sign-in (with Google, and Apple on iPhone), we will update this policy first. Only a sign-in ID and your child's progress would be stored, and you could delete your account in the app or at /delete-my-data.
7. How long we keep data
- Anonymous story and search statistics: individual records 90 days, then only totals.
- Story ratings and story requests: kept until we delete them; they hold no name or user ID.
- Crash reports: up to 90 days.
- Purchase records: as long as needed for your subscription and as required by tax law.
8. Your choices and rights
- Turn off anonymous statistics in Settings › Privacy.
- Turn off notifications in Settings or your phone's settings.
- Delete everything on the phone by uninstalling the app.
- Ask us any question, or ask us to access or delete data, at chivchiv@studyabroadcompass.org. Depending on where you live (for example the UK, EU or US), you may have legal rights to access, correct or delete your data, and to complain to your data protection authority (in the UK, the ICO).
9. Changes
If we change this policy, we'll update the date above and, for important changes, tell you in the app before they apply.
